So Sharp to Leave the Daily Deal Space

As it appears So Sharp has shut down it’s website and is due to leave the Daily Deal industry within Australia. DealWatch is still waiting on an official announcement from Former So Sharp CEO, Daniel McDonald. As it appears, Daniel’s LinkedIn title is now “Seeking new opportunities” and has removed all reference to So Sharp.

Just recently So Sharp were involved in a Kitchen Mixer incident with illegitimate Suppliers, subsequently  So Sharp was forced to refund over 3000 kitchen mixers at a huge loss. We believe this may have had a large impact on the decision to close shop. Nevertheless it just goes to show the Daily Deal industry can be a “make it, or break it” arena. The industry is not forgiving based on it’s hugely competitive characteristic, one mistake can ruin brand reputation and allow competitors to strive.

It is unknown whether So Sharp has plans to sell it’s customer base to a nearby competitor, as of Tue 28th of August their domain was a blank page. With the large traffic still heading to the domain, one might assume they might redirect the entire domain to a competitor.

We will update this post once we hear back from the Former So Sharp CEO.

About So Sharp

So Sharp joined the group buying space in 2011 and has since had a huge impact on the Industry. Leading the way mostly for Online Deals, but tailored a unique range of Local Deals – such as Massages, Restaurants etc.

Five Helpful Tips when considering Daily Deals

When it comes to getting a large discount on a product or service, daily deals are among the best methods of achieving this. Daily deals can be a fantastic way to save money while ensuring that the products you purchase are of a high quality. Below are five of the most quintessential tips when it comes to ensuring the ability to take advantage of daily deals offers.

#1- Always check the expiry

All daily deals offers have expiry dates, some sooner than others. The last thing you would want to do after purchasing a daily deals coupon is to kep it for months and then realise that it has passed its expiry. Checking the expiry date of a daily deal is crucial in ensuring that you don’t miss out on the deal itself.

#2- Buyer beware – don’t forget the fine print

Make sure the dates fit, doing this ensures that the dates of which the product that has been purchased can be claimed fit in with the schedule of the buyer. For example, if the offer in question is for amanicure deal, the company will generally have an expiry date printed in the fine print, it is important that the buyer is able to claim the manicure before the offer expires.

#3- Set a reminder to remember to redeem the deal

The simplicity of this step is that all mobile phones are equipped with the ability to set notifications set on them. Setting a reminder will ensure that you don’t miss out on a deal that you really want!

#4- Use a daily deal aggregator

Aggregators work laboriously to ensure that the best deals are available to you in the one convenient location. DealWatch is a great example of an aggregator, as all of the deals on DealWatch are categorised by city, the convenience of this is that when the user’s location is selected, voila! A collection of city-specific deals are displayed.

#5- Book ahead of time

A good rule of thumb is to ensure that you book a week prior to the date that you wish to receive your product. The best way to ensure that you receive your product prior to its expiry date is to make a booking for a time prior to the expiry date.

Daily deals may seem confusing at first, but following the above steps will assist in simplifying the process, leaving you with more time to do what you love best –shop for sydney deals!

DealWatch launches in the United Kingdom

Australian-based startup DealWatch has crossed the waters to available within the United Kingdom. DealWatch is currently available in both Australia and the New Zealand. This is expected to have a large impact within the UK daily deal aggregator market with many under-established or abandoned aggregators remaining.

The daily deal market within the UK is expanding with a few large worldwide competitors such as Living Social and Group On, as well as local founded competitors KGB Deals and “Wowcher”.

DealWatch takes a stance in cleaning up consumers massively spammed inboxes one at a time, in using DealWatch consumers can aggregate the over 10 emails per day, into a one simple email – sorted by popularity. This saves consumers both time and money! “It’s most definitely a win-win situation, not only can our users save time by not having to check each site per day, but daily deals also end up saving them money”, says Founder of DealWatch, Alex Whiteside.

DealWatch UK will be available in over 30 cities, and serve up over 35 daily deal sites. “It was quite interesting, as we were developing over 40 of the listed sites are now out of business, page not found or have been bought out by larger competitors. This shapes the rapid consolidation process of the daily deal market”, says Mr Whiteside.

By the end of the year DealWatch hopes to expand its international portfolio even greater, more details will be released in the months to come.

Our Review

Cudo offers a modern design with a huge range of local cities, Cudo is one of a few daily deal sites still offering deep discounts within the local space. Cudo offers deals within many of the capital cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth and in addition they also run offers within Newcastle, Wollongong and the Gold Coast. Whether your looking for a hair salon treatment, Thai massage, or great place to grab a bite for dinner – daily deals are the answer. Every day, hundreds of deals around Sydney go live, in fact, this number averages around 300 per day.

With so many deals, Sydneysider’s are turning to daily deal aggregators for a great way to save both time and money. The idea is simple, every day, the over 30 sites are crawled and this data is gathered into one big website. The savvy consumers then visit this website for a simple, easy, and effective way sort, filter and scourage the many deals.

These websites are so intelligent they can even sort these deals into specific categories such as massage deals, hair salon deals or teeth whitening deals. Sydney has much to offer and with over 300 deals it is near essential to filter by category.

Many of these sites also offer a unique way to redeem the deals. Generally speaking, just click the “view deals” button and you will be taken straight to the website for purchase. Upon purchasing your daily deal in sydney, you will be presented with a great way to redeem this deal. Most likely, the deal will arrive in your email inbox and you will take this into the local restraunt, hair salon or massage palaur.

Whether or not you are looking to save money, deals in sydney are a great way to find the best the city has to offer. Just recently a deal went live for over 50% of an Entire Massage Therapy treatment. This treatment offered a bath salt spa followed by a swedish therapeutic massage.

In most cases, these offers are limited by time – for example, a particular offer of recent only lasted just 24 hours. Most websites recommend to jump in on the deals quick before they run out of time and you miss out on a really great offer.

Living Social Review

View today’s deals at living social.

Over the next month, DealWatch will be conducting a review of each and every daily deal site within Australia. To start this off, we will be conducting a review of Living Social Australia. Living Social has been operating since 2007, and recently joined the Australian market in 2011.

Living Social aims to provide a unique group buying platform within a modern, intrinsic and intuitive design. Beyond the modern design lay a vast array of professional stock photos. This seeks to identify the quality of the website site, although to many the use of stock photos may be a trade off for true perception of the underlying quality.

Sydney city contained about 30 deals all of which were present on DealWatch, however, Living Social tends to include deals from other “nearby cities”. Funnily enough, these nearby cities (to sydney) consisted of “north melbourne” and “canberra”. Both of which are beyond a 4-hour drive – a drive of which should not be classified as “nearby”, this may be confusing for some at first.

Living Social however, unlike many other daily deal sites, do not require a compulsory signup before browsing the site. DealWatch finds this useful as users can jump straight in without all the nitty gritty signup steps. Much to the concern, Living Social allow login with Facebook which speeds up this process may you wish to purchase a deal.

Another thing we like is that Living Social offer well written content and the website is formatted nicely in a way which is consistent throughout all cities (even countries). This portrays an image that Living Social is a well-managed website with proper authoritative measures in place within the editorial teams. In addition, Living Social consistently provide a location, fine print and highlights of each deal.

Living Social offer a swift and easy payment system which had sent out a voucher within 5 minutes. Rather then printing out the coupon, we were also able to install the iPhone application for quick redemption at the merchant. The deal we had purchased was a massage deal in Sydney.

What we like

  • No need to subscribe before viewing deals
  • A large range of deals, and spans many of the suburban cities
  • Well written creatives, and well designed layout
  • Dynamic refund policy – 5 days for all deals, except 14 days for Escape travel deals.

What we don’t like

  • Images are not a true depiction of the location as stock images are used
  • Deals are targeted mostly to women

Final Rating
8/10

Studies Show Daily Deals May Actually Be “Sustainable”

With GroupOn’s stock fearing a potential future for the organisation, Rice university has proven in a study conducted that the daily deal model can be most sustainable. The study, which pursued over 641 small business during 3 months of Spring 2011, has identified that a staggering 62% of businesses surveyed in spring 2012 said they have actually made money from a deal.

These studies present significant findings that summarise a long-term perspective of the daily deal model. Sure, upon initial redemption of a coupon the business is set to lose profits based on a low cost structure. However, after the business transforms this customer into a repeat purchaser and loyal asset the company can gain returns.

The study significantly gave a longitudinal insight into the impact of daily deal campaigns. Thus, rectifying the assumption that daily deals are a once off model for customers who are seeking “low prices”, a.k.a Bargain Hunters.

Trending Daily Deal News, Coupobox Sells Up, Groupon Stocks Fall

This week has seen some interesting movements within the daily deal industry.

UK Aggregator Coupobox sells to DealCollector

UK Aggregator Coupobox announced that it has sold to DealCollector. This shows signs of consolidation within the European market. Stavros Prodromou, the founder and former CEO of Coupobox, highlights the sales were in the lower six figure range. Prodromou also notes that Coupobox has been highly profitable within its two-man team.

DealCollector formed its ground within the German market and with this purchase will now continue expansion into the UK. said Mathias Jacobs, CEO of DealCollector, released in a statement, “Our acquisition of Coupobox will bolster the company’s position in the daily deal sector and enhance our strategic partnerships; it’s an exciting prospect for DealCollector”. DealWatch is awaiting response from DealCollector, however, estimates provided suggest DealCollector has a subscriber base of near 1 million.

Coupobox founded in 2010, by Tolga Oenal and Alex Petrov claims to be quite profitable, however, with a subscriber base of near 60,000 we think otherwise.
